Free Form Carving – Bowls
- Saturday, October 8, 2022 @ 12:00 – 2:30pm
The one aspect that permeates my Artwork is my love of nature, especially wildlife. Born and raised in Wisconsin, I spent my childhood on a farm with my parents and 12 siblings. My favorite pass times include hunting and fishing.
After working 38 years in the paper industry, as a supervisor/construction, I welcomed the opportunity to try a new endeavor. My love for nature brought me into the woods 25 years ago, where my twin brother and I began a small part time logging operation. It was during this time in the woods, surrounded by a variety of native tree species, that I was introduced to the unique characteristics each Tree held. The distinctive differences in color, texture, and grain patterns, naturally creates a rare platform for art. With my curiosity peaked, I was on a 10-year path to discovering the hidden potential of an unsightly burrow, or “knot”. In most circumstances during logging operations, these one-of-a-kind pieces of wood would be left to decay on the forest floor. However, through my Art, I try to bring the wood back to life, by polishing and burning something nice on it so it can be enjoyed for years to come.
I am a self-taught Pyrography Artist and sought-after Teacher. For the last 11 years I’ve traveled to countless shows to earn the highest award of “Master” in Pyrography. I specialize in high realism, wildlife, and my Art varies from 2’ to 7’ tall. Since my retirement this creative drive and passion has increased. I have taken personal painting lessons from an incredible wildlife oil painter/teacher. She has shown me countless ways to enhance my woodburning, through color, shadow, realism, etc.
I enjoy giving back to the community. My volunteer work includes free Pyrography instruction to 4-H groups and boy and girl Scouts. in Marinette and Oconto, WI counties.
However, my love of wood has again sparked my creative side! For the past 5 years I have been creating award winning, free form wooden bowls, vases and sculptures of all sizes, with that “WOW” factor.
***For the Spring Show, I will be sharing the steps necessary to help you appreciate the true beauty in wood and use their natural shapes. I will share with you my custom-made bench, tools, grinders, sanding techniques, along with finishing. This is not Lath turning class! This is a “Free Form” class instruction, along with many slide photos of before and after, of wooden art creations. It is my desire that when you leave this class you will be inspired to take the next step in your own art and try something new. The challenge is worth the trip!
